Chapter Six

I STOOD there, waiting for him as I’d been asked, and watched him dart around his sweet little house before he disappeared down the hall.

It was a warm and welcoming little seaside cottage with rustic french country gray hardwood floors, built-in bookshelves in the living room, and antique hurricane lamps on both ends of the overstuffed couch with deep-button detailing. There were pillows and throws ready to lie down on or wrap up in, and the coffee table was cluttered with open books, a TV remote, and an iPod, as well as a magnifying glass and various maps. The Persian rugs that littered the living room were all in smalt and titian and damask that set off the distressed white walls, and a bay window looked out on a beach from the living room. I felt good in his house, relaxed, and since I was on edge everywhere, the feeling was at once completely foreign and frighteningly appealing. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to leave.

It was funny how the details of the space sort of crept up on me. I hadn’t noticed much when Brin was in front of me. When he was in my space, he was all I saw, and for the bodyguard that I was supposed to be at the moment, that was the opposite of great. I needed to start noticing my surroundings immediately.

“Hey.”

Looking over to where he stood, having returned to the living room from the hall, I found him hopping on one foot as he pulled on a pair of jump boots that were clearly not military issue.

“So this thing at the science center—it’s not the open house because that was back in October. This is just my department, but I think since you’re forcing me to go that you should have to suffer along with me.”

“Of course I’m going with you.”

“No, I know you’re going with me, I get the whole bodyguard thing. What I’m saying is that you have to go as my date and be interactive.”

“I can’t do that. I’m there to protect you.”

“I’d rather hold your hand.”

“Do you get that people came to your house to kill you?”

He nodded.

“Then why aren’t you taking this seriously?”

“I am taking it seriously.”

“You’re talking about holding my hand!”

“I thought we covered the part where you were a multitasker already.”

“I can’t protect you if we’re on a date.”

“I disagree and I have a question.”

He was exhausting. “Go ahead.”

“You’re not normally a bodyguard.”

“Yeah, I am. I guard my boss.”

“That’s not what I heard.”

“Oh no?”

“I was told that you have people you oversee. You check on things and have other duties within Mr. Jankovic’s organization.”

“Right.”

He shrugged. “So saying you’re a bodyguard… that’s not actually correct, is it.”

And it wasn’t, he was right. I hadn’t been “hired muscle” in years.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there is a protective element in your day-to-day duties, and clearly, by how easily you dispatched the two men who came to kill me, you’re more than capable of being
